Back in the mid 90s Family Law litigation was even more hostile than it is now. That is why the Family Lawyers set up the Family Law Section of the local bar association. Things did improve.
When I was president I was looking for a way to promote settlement so families did not have to go through the expensive trauma of a trial. This was before mediation became popular, but I thought if people could get together and focus on their case there would be opportunities to settle cases. One way to do that was to set depositions, but Court Reporters are too expensive for most families who are already paying for lawyers. My solution was to have a video camera available at nominal cost to Family Lawyers for video depositions. We settled a lot of cases with that camera. As you can see we have not kept up with technology and with mediation we no longer need this procedure to settle cases but at the time it was a big step in the right direction.
